Raw Diet Advantage
There is a growing awareness across the country that we all need to make wiser choices in the foods that we consume. Increasingly, we are trying to improve our diet and nutritional profile by choosing more wholesome and less processed foods. We are slowly beginning to appreciate the fact that Mother Nature has already provided us with the tools needed to live a healthy lifestyle. The further we stray from her, the worse we feel and the more we visit the doctor. Intuitively, when we live a fast food lifestyle, we know it is detrimental to our health, but it is difficult to break from the addictions of the convenient, preservative laden, MSG cuisine that has been imposed on us in the modern world and promoted by corporate America.
Our furry friends are challenged with the same situation!!! The problem is expanded for them because we choose what their diet will be, and usually that diet consists of all the throw away scraps that are not fit for human consumption. We want to do the best for them, and we think we are, but truthfully, most of us don't even know or understand the ingredients in our own food. We put our trust in the companies with the largest advertising budgets, and we believe them to have our best interests at heart. By the time we realize the truth, the raw truth, it is too late. Our feline friends are now addicted and it becomes difficult to transition them towards a healthier option. Some are lucky enough to escape health problems in the same way people who use tobacco their whole lives live to the age of ninety.
At DodgerzDen, we realize that our feline friends are obligate carnivores. Period. That means they must consume a diet almost exclusively consisting of the body of another animal. This is the way nature intended it. You don't mess with Mother Nature. Mom also said that it doesn't have to be cooked. Cooking food, and any manner of processing, degrades the nutrient profile of the original product. Cats must instictively know this. I never saw a cat set up a barbecue pit after catching a mouse.
Within the holistic veterinary community, it is said that poor diet accounts for 90% of all disease, whether it be a factor or a direct cause. With multiple varieties of cancer, diabetes, obesity, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic renal failure, and other common illnesses running rampant within the feline population, why would we not strive to provide our pets with a cleaner, less tainted and more natural food supply? Why would raw feeding be such a controversial topic when it is the most natural method of feeding? Almost without fail, when I mention to folks that I am in the business of promoting a rawfed diet, they gasp and ask about contamination. The fact is that ALL food has the potential to be bacterially contaminated, whether it be dry or wet, raw or cooked. Safe handling procedures must always be emphasized from the gleaning of ingredients to serving time and every step in between. If your cat's food becomes infected with bacteria such as e.coli or salmonella, they are less likely to be affected than you would be, as a human, because they have proportionately smaller digestive tracts than humans. This allows them to pass the contaminant more quickly, and because their digestive environment is acidic, it becomes difficult for pathogens to survive. Mom designed it that way. What she never factored in was the possibility of being poisoned by foods that are heavily processed and laced with artificial ingredients.
This section of the website is devoted to my fellow cat lovers who are new to and intrigued by the rawfed movement. Even if you don't purchase from DodgerzDen, I hope this to be a starting point to motivate you to further educate yourself on how to improve your cat's nutrition. In the future, I will be discussing the benefits of a rawfed diet and on topics such as the dangers of excess carbohydrates and rendered ingredients (also known as by-products) as well as the subject of artificial and unnecessary additives. Also, I have provided many excellent educational links within the Resources page. Please feel free to visit.
